Interlocks: What to Expect

After receiving a DUI, Utah law requires the use of an ignition interlock device for a court-determined amount of time.

The devices prevent alcohol-impaired persons from being able to start the vehicle as well as capture results from each use. This data is then provided to designated authorities and used to assess compliance with the interlock program.

Your First Appointment

At your first appointment, our technician will install the device in your vehicle, answer any questions you have, and provide training materials. You’ll watch an instructional video on how to use the device, and we’ll provide you with a device user manual. We’ll also get you scheduled for your first monitoring and calibration check.

See below what to prepare for your appointment.

Using the Device

The interlock device will require a test before the vehicle can be started, and then periodically while you’re driving. In most cases, it takes just 20 seconds for the device to be ready to use before you can take a test and start your vehicle (could be longer in cold weather). Our devices use a blow-suck technique that is user-friendly and can be used safely while driving. Before you leave your installation appointment, you’ll feel confident that you can use the device correctly.

Regular Reporting

The devices are programmed to automatically send the results of each test to the designated agent. Reports also include dates, times, and when the engine is turned on and off.

Installation

During the installation of your interlock device, we will have you go through our training program to help you get familiarized on how to use the interlock device. We provide you the tools and resources to be successful while using our interlock devices. Installation and training takes less than two hours to complete.

Calibration Check-ins

In most cases, interlock devices require monitoring and calibration checks every thirty or sixty days, performed at the service center. This typically takes just 15 minutes and is done by appointment. You can schedule your next visit each time you’re at the service center.
